| | Surgery FAQ: | When do I bring my pet in for surgery? Surgery check-in is between 7am - 8:30am Monday - Friday. Please be prepared to spend 10-15 minutes with the surgical nurse during check-in. We understand that these hours may not work for everyone's schedule. Special arrangements can be made for later appointments, or overnight stays. Please inform a staff member if you need a special check-in appointment time. The doctors ask that you do not feed your pet after 8pm the night before surgery. Water is okay, but please no food - unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. | | | How long will my pet need to stay? Most surgical patients are able to go home the same day after 3pm, however every patient is different, and some require longer recoveries from anesthesia. We will be able to give you a more definite time when we call with your pets update after surgery. Declaw patients are kept overnight, and are usually discharged after 12pm the next business day. | | | What can I expect after surgery? Depending on the type of surgery, we recommend keeping your pet quiet for 10 - 14 days. Licking or chewing of the incision is strongly discouraged, and can lead to severe swelling, infections, or much worse. If licking is a concern, please let your doctor or surgical nurse know, so your pet can be fitted with an Elizabethan (plastic lamp shade type) collar. You should wait 10 -14 days before bathing your pet after surgery, or 1 day after sutures (if any) are removed. | | | What about pain and discomfort? Our doctors and staff are very concerned about post surgical pain. Although pain can not be completely eliminated, we do our best to limit pain sensations whenever possible. Pain medicine such as Rimadyl will be sent home with your pet to give orally for 2 - 7 days. Although your pet may seem comfortable after surgery, our doctors prefer that you finish out the entire prescription. Narcotic pain medicines such as Buprenex or Butorphanol will be given by injection prior to anesthesia and surgery. This helps reduce stress, and also reduces the amount of gas anesthesia needed for surgery. | | | For After hour emergencies: Please call 744-9800 for Veterinary Emergency Care South, located on Hull Street Road across from the Home Depot. |
